Last night I was listening to a Jon Foreman song called "Your Love is Strong." It made me think about my life and the many ways God has blessed me, in times of need and in times of plenty, and I thought about the season we are currently in. I thought about all the things we want, the lists we've compiled, the presents we're buying and the parties we're planning. And suddenly it all seemed pointless.
I look out the window
The birds are composing
Not a note is out of tune
Or out of place
I look at the meadow
And stare at the flowers
Better dressed than any girl
On her wedding day
So why do I worry?
Why do I freak out?
God knows what I need
You know what I need
Wow. Suddenly the greatest gift I'll receive this Christmas plopped into my lap. God. The creator of the universe. The ruler of all nations and all eternity. The man who sits in the seat of judgement and was also judged for my sake knows what I need.
Sure, we'll exchange gifts this year, and most times it will be from a sincere place. It will be out of the joy and abundance of what we have. But when it comes down to it no one who will give me a gift this year will know my true needs as a human being. But God does. And I can trust Him to give according to His will for my life.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,
what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is
not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in
barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more
valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today
and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe
you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
