Who Brews the Kombucha

I'm getting my first batch of kombucha and my little baby scobys this Thursday. In case you are unfamiliar with kombucha tea I'll give you a brief description...

Kombucha is a beverage that is made by placing a big honking slab of bacteria and yeast (the scoby) in a bath of black/green/white sweet tea and letting it steep and ferment for a few weeks until the bacteria and yeast has eaten most of the sugar out of the tea mixture.

One might ask, "why would you want to drink a brew of bacteria?" And the simple answer is, I don't really want to, but I hear that they health benefits of drinking it can be quite good, and some people enjoy the fermented, fizzy flavor. For me, that is yet to be discovered.

Supposedly the good bacteria kind of acts as a probiotic... it helps balance your gastrointestinal tract, helps your liver to function more properly, and acts as a detoxifying agent. Supposedly.

I feel that as a blogger known for adventure and as a lover of new/strange things it is my duty to be the guinea pig on this one. Word on the street is that people have been brewing kombucha for it's medicinal properties since 400 B.C. (People have also been smoking opiates for that long...so I'm not sure there's any argument there.) I can't wait to tell you more about if it really works and if I can see any increase in my vitality from this magical tea.

I also plan to post about my scobys....which I will name once I adopt them.

Question of the Day:
Have you ever brewed your own or tried someone else's kombucha tea?
What should I name my scobys?

  1. You know... I've never been brave enough to try kombucha (and the hefty price tag at my local store is enough to scare away what little bravery I have mustered up, hehe.) I am most interested to hear all about your experiences.

Also, I love that you are going to name your scobys. Scooby the scoby seems like a good name to me ;)

  6. This is intriguing, I've not heard of this stuf before and am intersted to see how it turns out. I used to make my own wine but gave it up as I was terrible at it. How about Scoby Dicks? Or is that potentially rude.

I think you should name your scoby Scoby Scoby Doo. But only if you say it in a Scooby Doo voice!

  13. Oh gosh, this is going to make me sound awful, but I have heard about this tea...because of Lindsay Lohan drinking it and getting in trouble because it has a very low alcohol content! haha. I would be really interested in trying this though!

  18. I've been making kombucha for the past month actually. My neighbour gave me some of her scobys to start me out. It's a lot of fun, and when the recipe turns out, it's actually quite delicious tasting! My first batch turned out like vinegar, so don't be discouraged if that happens to you - just try again!
ps: don't use fruity teas - apparently they turn out more vinegary.
    Happy brewing!

  26. How fun! I am not much of tea drinker but that looks like fun! Someone told me that you can make your own vanilla extract with vanilla beans and vodka. I know someone who is trying it, and I am curious to see if it will work. :)
