Weekend Update| July 11, 2011

Good Monday morning to you all! I hope you had a fantastic weekend. I don't know how the weather is in your area, but it's been quite nice around these parts. It's in the upper 90's and blazing hot, but we've had summer showers every day to cool the earth down a bit and make it more bearable.

After a run.

We spent a lot of our weekend outside. Did I tell you that we signed up for a 5k race? Lately we've been trying to train for that (we're not runners, so it takes a lot of training even though it's a pretty short race.) It felt so great to get hot and sweaty and then dive into a cool pool. I'm feeling so energized and refreshed this morning because of it, although I feel like my muscles might fall off at any moment.

Running isn't the only thing that took us outside for the weekend, we also went to Bok Towers in Lake Wales with my dad to celebrate his birthday, the big 5-0! Here's some pics from the wildlife we encountered and a sneak peek of the tower we saw. More on that in tomorrow's post!

Giant locust. Isn't he beautiful up close?

Squirrel, a.k.a. flufferchunks

A toad. I love his big belly!

Me and the birthday  boy in front of the tower.

Bok Tower...one of the most beautiful places I've seen in Florida.

Did you get outside at all this weekend? What's your favorite outdoor activity?

  1. a 5k? Go you! I was outside spray painting chairs this weekend. Not exactly aerobic :)

  2. I am so jealous, Hannah -- you are a cute runner, even in 90 degree heat! Must be a "Florida girl" thing ;) We had high humidity this morning and I was a hot mess within 5 minutes of leaving my house, haha.

I did get to spend some time (other than running!) outdoors this weekend -- I read magazines & sipped wine on the back porch while Jon grilled for us. Heavenly!

...Excited to hear more about Bok Tower this week... it looks gorgeous!

  3. You are too a runner! Anyone who can run and still want to do it the next day is a runner. That is you :) it hurts my joints, but I can do jump squats, jacks, and run in place all day long... somethin' about the repetition, I dunno... Bok Tower looks awesome, I heard about it from one of Ben's friends last night, and we've had it on our list for a while so we definitely need to hit it up for a day trip. It looks gorgeous.
My favorite thing to do outdoors is... i'm not a huge outdoorsy person because I'm not a fan of the sun, but relaxing on the beach on a breezy morning is just lovely!

  5. Amy- Haha, I may look half decent standing there but I look like an idiot running. Have you ever seen the Friends episode where Phoebe goes running? It's kinda like that...

Caitlin- It's just so weird to call oneself a running when they mostly are in a hate-hate relationship with it. :) But I always feel good afterward. I feel like true runners always look forward to the challenge (masochists...j/k)

  6. I am not very good with this geogia heat.. and the humidity. And the one time I did go outdoors this weekend, I got attacked by mosquitoes. Its so bad my husband teases me about giving people the pox. haha I am such a baby I know! Pretty sure I'd be the first to die if lost in the wilderness...Youe pictures are so pretty! I LOVE the one of the squirrel! I really like the name flufferchunks!

  7. Awesome!! I actually signed up for a race as well, a 10k! And I have been busting my butt training the past two weeks! Luckily it has been pretty cold where I am so running in heat is not an issue. When is your race!?

  8. Onieka- It's in September, so we have some time to train. But time sure is flying and most days fly by without me training (instead I enjoy doing yoga...it's more a passion than running.)

I did a 10k 2 years ago, but haven't kept up with my running so I'm back at square one again. ;)

    When is your race?

  13. What amazing pictures! The detail on those animals is incredible!

Kyle and I took Madigan to the Park of Roses here in Columbus yesterday. I got a pretty gnarly bug bite but the sun felt sooooo good and we got some great pictures of the flowers.

  17. Thanks for stopping by my site earlier. Good for you for signing up for a 5k. When I did mine I had been running for a few months and was positive I had run that distance before (though had never actually checked). I remember being in the race and thinking "When will this end???" So, it's all relative to what you're used to :)
