Queen of the Wild Frontier

Who's that gliding over the still waters of Orlando and soaking up the warm Florida sunshine, you might ask?

Man, she's living the life, and look at that tan! Well...

It's me! And I am enjoying the Florida outdoors and every day I "live the life." I love my life! And taking time to slow down and enjoy my surroundings helps to remind me of that fact.  I do have to dispel one myth, though. Though I am tanner than most northerners, I think my photo editing program may have made my legs a wee bit tanner than they really are. And they look a little too orange. I swear on a seagull that I do not use self-tanners. Honestly, I don't.

Last Saturday morning we went out in our friends kayaks again. This time we kind of went out separate ways and enjoyed some quite time out on the lake. About 30 minutes in I discovered this little love nest of Sandhill Cranes. Above is the daddy, very protective. I thought it might come pluck out my eyeballs at any second while I snapped this with my phone.

He had every right to be protective. When his wifey got up off the nest I found this little guy!

Isn't nature amazing? They're just a couple of birds, working together against the wild frontier to bring a little baby bird into the world. It was the perfect gift for my morning, and one of the highlights of my kayaking time.

The other was when I stopped rowing, plopped my legs up on my boat and let myself drift away for a while. The gentle rocking, the cool breeze, and the squawking of seagulls above made for the perfect start to my day.

Question of the Day:
What kinds of things make you slow down and enjoy life?

Weekend Update| January 23, 2012

Happy Monday! I don't know why, but against all odds I am extremely happy and energetic this morning. Yup, I'm the "looks like somebody's got a case of the Mondays" girl. I just can't wait to find someone to say that to. It feels good to be her every now and then!

John was out of town last week and he came back on Friday night. I enjoyed sleeping in on Saturday and then heading out to do some shopping at Whole Foods and our local produce market. When we got back to the house I made granola protein bars (recipe to come this week) and then took a nice nap.

Protein bar preview!

After my nap I went for a 1.5 mile run. I'm really excited that our training for the 5k in February is starting to take us past the 1 mile marker on a consistent basis. I think I'll finally start to see my endurance build. Today we have another 1.5 miler and then by the end of the week we are pushing up to 2 miles! I've never run that long on my own accord without being in a race. :)

Saturday night I made a really yummy new recipe that I found on the Whole Foods recipe page. I'll also be sharing that this week. So get ready for some awesome new recipes to put on your to-do list. They are called Grilled Veggie Pitas, but I made it with a twist. Here's a teaser....

Sunday morning we got up and ate breakfast, put on our outdoor gear and headed out for some kayaking on the lake. What a beautiful morning! The birds were chirping and water was still. Look you can see my reflection...

We had a blast, and I would love to make this a weekly thing. Not only is it a great upper body workout, but it's so nice to slow down and glide across the water and notice the little things that are so easily missed in nature otherwise.

It was a great weekend, and something tells me that this week is going to be equally magnificent!

Question of the Day:
What is your favorite outdoor activity?

Accomplishment for the New Year

"Resolutions" always leave a bad taste in my mouth. Mostly because we go into them half heartedly...the very word means that we have resolved to...or we are resolute in our thinking. But I find that most often we come up with a list of things we "wish" we could have in a perfect world and kind of mosy along to try and prove we can make them a reality. Not much resoluteness there.

"Goals" is a good word. Here we have not only wished something, but we have set up a method with which we will accomplish them. We know what we want in life, and we set it in our sights and create steps to achieve them. This is a great plan, but even the term "goals" has kind of worn itself out...

This year I have a list of "accomplishments." You might think it is kind of strange to credit yourself for things that haven't happened yet, but I feel like if I already create the award for myself, all I have to do is achieve and accept it (and maybe make a lengthy speech) and then I will have done something great...I've already set myself up for success.

This year I will accomplish:

1. Running a 5k in February without walking.
2. Running a 15k in September for the first time.
3. Complete my graduate certificate in TEFL.
4. Complete my CPM training (Church Planting Movement).
5. Learn to seize the moments that I have alone when John is traveling instead of dreading those times.

Brooks Adrenaline G12s

Let's talk about accomplishment #1 today. Last year I started running and ran/walked my first 5k in September of 2011. It felt so great to accomplish that goal, but I really wanted to strive for excellence and signed up for another one in February so I could push myself to run the whole thing.

For Christmas we bought ourselves some actual running shoes. I've been running in Nike cross-trainers. And though they are great for cross-training, running is a whole different story. We put down the cash and made an investment in our feet and in our new hobby. I'll be using these bad boys to train for my races this year! :)

In February I'll be running this race...only the 5k, not the marathon...

We are super excited. We will be running this one with my mom and step-dad, David. It's going to be such a fun time and a great way to build us up as a family. I can't wait to share with you how I accomplish this goal and prove to myself that I AM A RUNNER and that the hard work does pay off!

Question of the Day:
What stops you from reaching your goals? Is it the semantics?

Weekend Update| December 5, 2011

Good morning everyone! Did you have a fabulous weekend? We sure did! My mom and step-dad came up for a visit and we had such a great time. The weather couldn't have been better for the activities we had planned, either. The mornings were really cool but by mid-day the sun was out and we were enjoying temperatures in the mid 70's!

They drove in Friday night and we enjoyed some dinner I had prepared. We played a couple rounds of rummy and I was destroyed at the last minute by David (step-dad). That hurt as I have been the reigning champ in our house lately. John was overjoyed at my loss. ;)

Saturday morning we got up and ran around the neighborhood together. We are all running a 5k in Melbourne (FL) in February, so it was fun to do a little training together. My family is fast! They've got quite a few years on me and still managed 12 minute miles! I discovered that I run much faster on land than on the "dreadmill", is that the same for you?

After the run we made breakfast and packed up a picnic for our day out. My parents just got a new D-SLR so we took them out to Lake Eola to practice shooting with it. They got some really great shots! Everyone and their brother was out at the lake, putting up Christmas decorations and running around the trail. Above is a picture John took of my mom and I. Below is a picture that my mom took of us. She's getting the hang of it!

I think she really captured our love... :)

Our next stop was going to be Whole Foods for a little stocking up on the grain wall. (My parents don't have a Whole Foods in their town, so it's a ritual when they come up.) We made one last stop at the ice cream truck before we left the lake, but came away empty handed as the ice cream was way over-priced and wouldn't have done our tummies any good...we all have the same whole foods, mostly veg diet. Nonetheless, we were sad about our loss...

David had quite the smile though, he must have looked into the future to see what would happen when we went to Whole Foods. We came away with two ah-mazing smoothies! They got a PB&J fruit smoothie (almond milk, berries, peanut butter, bananas, etc.) and we got the Kalicious smoothie (kale, spinach, bananas, apple juice, lemons). Our smoothie was so good I drank it in 30 minutes. And just to give you a comparison, it usually takes me 3 hours to finish my smoothies in the morning.

I was in love!

We finished our evening with a trip to Bass Pro Outdoor World and then came home and chowed down on homemade butternut squash soup, red onion and tomato paninis, and an assortment of goodies picked up at the hot counter at Whole Foods.

I spent the evening stressing over a final group project for my online Strategies in Teaching ESOL class. Praise the Lord we finally got everything done (last minute) and were able to turn it in last night for a grade. I can't tell you how ready I was to be done with this class! I need a break!

Sunday we went to church and hung out around the house for a while playing with out pictures and teaching my mom and David to edit photos with Gimp 2. It was a nice, relaxing day before the craziness of this weeks started up again.

Something tells me this week will be a little more than I can handle.

Question of the Day:
What kinds of things do you do with your parents?

Fitness Update:
I'm feeling great these days folks! First I want to share with you a major victory...a little over a year ago I took the Real Age Test, and scored 34 years old! (That was 12 years over my actual age.) Over the last year I have increased the amount of exercise I do, changed to a 65% vegetarian diet, started getting more sleep at night, and cut out almost all drinks but water and the occasional sweet tea. I took the Real Age Test again yesterday and scored at 20 years old...that's 4 years younger than I actually am! Needless to say, I'm feeling on top of the world!

We have been running 2-3 times per week in preparation for our 5k on September 24th, go to the gym 1-2 days a week to lift weights, and we do yoga 2 days a week or as needed to relieve tight and sore muscles after our runs. With each run and each weight I feel stronger and more endurant, but the yoga is what makes it all possible. Without yoga as the foundation I wouldn't be fit to do anything else.

Diet Update:
I've mentioned in previous posts that John and I are "Carnevegeveganarians." That is, we eat like vegans and vegetarians for most of our week and throw in some meat here and there when we feel like it. Making this change has completely changed our health...all our afternoon drowsiness is gone, we sleep better at night, we experience little to no illness (when we used to get sinus infections and colds year 'round), our dental health has drastically improved, fewer headaches, and even clearer skin.
Since we've so enjoyed the benefits of our healthy diet, we're taking it to the next level...

I'm a little hesitant to say "we're going vegan" because I feel like "vegan" has so many opinions surrounding it. Instead I'll say that John and I are going meat- and dairy-free for a month, and the "why?" is quite simple. Even though we have seen dramatic differences in our health lately in comparison with where we were at a year ago, John still experiences chronic heartburn. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes have been known to act as a medicinal diet, healing the body of it's ailments, preventing AND reversing heart disease and pro-longing one's lifespan.

Our meat- and dairy-free experiment is to see if it will rid John of daily heartburn for good. Currently he takes Priolosec daily, and has for years (which is not recommended) and we feel it's high time we try and deal with it. Chances are a doctor will put him on a prescribed medication, and we aren't interested in those...we want the chance to heal ourselves by way of good food straight from Mother Earth.

Our diet starts Monday, and I can't wait to see what happens. I'll keep you all in the loop and say a prayer that this finally brings John some relief!

Question of the Day:

Are you a vegetarian or meat- and dairy-free?
Have you tried in the past?

Finding a Reason to Run

I wish I looked like this when I ran....

But instead I usually look like this....

As you know, John and I have been "training" for a 5k. I feel like, lately, I've gotten into a rut. I know that if I work at it I will enjoy it, because I have before! Three years ago I took three months to train for a 10k and I felt amazing. There's nothing like being able to run for 20 minutes straight without breaking a sweat, and even though I miss that feeling it's not enough to get my butt out the door.

For some reason I can't find my motivating factor. I've tried...

"Running to stay fit." - Even though my body has definitely seen better days I seem to be content with it's smushy state.

"Running so I can have a rockin' bod." - Even though my body has definitely seen better days I seem to be content with it's smushy state.

"Running so I can eat whatever I want." - I'll eat whatever I want running or no running.

"Running so I'll have more energy." - Yeah, but I don't have the energy to start running!

"Running because it is fun." - Lies.

"Running because people who run are really cool." - Don't worry, I already have that covered. ; )

"Running because you're fleeing from law enforcement." - I've definitely considered committing crimes in an effort to jump start my training.

See? I'm at a loss here! I have exactly 5 weeks left to prepare for my 5k and I'm way behind! I'm trying my hardest to have the fact that I have to run 3.1 miles in 5 weeks be my motivating factor, but there's only one problem there...I'm the master procrastinator. I never worked on a homework assignment early...always the night before. I thrive on pressure! The only problem is, I know that it is impossible to train for a 5k the night before.  Oh Lord, do I need help!

Question(s) of the Day:
How do you stay motivated to run/work out?
Any tips for training for a race?
What keeps your workouts fresh and fun?

Weekend Update| July 11, 2011

Good Monday morning to you all! I hope you had a fantastic weekend. I don't know how the weather is in your area, but it's been quite nice around these parts. It's in the upper 90's and blazing hot, but we've had summer showers every day to cool the earth down a bit and make it more bearable.

After a run.

We spent a lot of our weekend outside. Did I tell you that we signed up for a 5k race? Lately we've been trying to train for that (we're not runners, so it takes a lot of training even though it's a pretty short race.) It felt so great to get hot and sweaty and then dive into a cool pool. I'm feeling so energized and refreshed this morning because of it, although I feel like my muscles might fall off at any moment.

Running isn't the only thing that took us outside for the weekend, we also went to Bok Towers in Lake Wales with my dad to celebrate his birthday, the big 5-0! Here's some pics from the wildlife we encountered and a sneak peek of the tower we saw. More on that in tomorrow's post!

Giant locust. Isn't he beautiful up close?

Squirrel, a.k.a. flufferchunks

A toad. I love his big belly!

Me and the birthday  boy in front of the tower.

Bok Tower...one of the most beautiful places I've seen in Florida.

Did you get outside at all this weekend? What's your favorite outdoor activity?

Be Your Own Doctor: Fitness

“The things you can do better if you’re in shape far outweigh the things
you can do better without exercise.” – Justin Mayes

It’s no big secret that staying fit helps keep us out of the doc’s office. Besides good nutrition, a routine fitness program helps us age well, prevents unnecessary pain in our bodies, aids in good digestion, prevents disease and builds self-confidence.

Fitness is an area I’ve always struggled in. Any of you who know me may start laughing right about now. I’m 5’5” and, up until recently, 105 pounds. Most people automatically assume that I have no weight or body issues, and because I’m thin must be uber healthy. This is not so.

According to the BMI scale, I’m a good 10 to 15 pounds underweight and have struggled to get to a healthy weight most of my life. Though I was born petite in build I, too, am at fault for not giving my body what it needs. I never struggled with eating disorders; on the contrary I would eat and eat in efforts to gain. I realize now that a healthy diet and routine fitness program help build the muscle I need to be at my healthy weight. I’m getting there, slowly. Being underweight comes with its own baggage. Aside from struggling with feeling like a woman and other self-esteem issues (side note: “You’re so skinny you make me sick” never sounds like a compliment) there is also the issue of fragility. I injure easy, become exhausted and overheated easy, and am more susceptible to illness (ironically, same as those struggling with weight on the opposite end of the spectrum.)

All that to say, being above or below our ideal weight can be discouraging and detrimental to our health. That’s why it is so important to take the time to care for our bodies. We only get one go around with the body we have, so it’s best to take care of it. Here are a couple things that I have learned about keeping a regular fitness routine that help motivate and encourage me...

1) Focus on what matters.

Fitness is not about losing or gaining weight. Though this is a definite benefit, we have to focus on the fact that is it HEALTHY. If all we are focused on is our appearance, we’ll stop the second we see the improvement we wanted and go right back to the way we lived before. Fitness has to be about life change. It has to be a decision to throw out the old way of thinking about how we live our lives and adopting a new, healthier way. A lifestyle change can be hard to make but once you’ve done it it’s equally hard to reverse.

2) Make it a priority.

I think a lot of times, especially if we have others to care for, it is easy to feel like it is selfish to think about taking care of ourselves and giving in to what our body needs. This is not good thinking. There is nothing selfish about taking care of what we have. We should be proud to take care of our bodies and do well with what we were given. Making fitness a priority makes a difference. Since it matters, make sure your schedule says so. Maybe schedule in 30 minutes of exercise right when you wake up or right when you get home from work. If you’re really going to make a lifestyle change, you probably need to do so as a family. Exercising together and encouraging one another to stay healthy is a really great way to build one another up and bond as a family unit.

3) Set achievable goals.

If it’s a long way to the ultimate fitness goal set little goals in place. When I think about where I want to be, I become overwhelmed. Sometimes the more motivating thing for me to do is to work on being able to jump jacks for 30 seconds without panting than to run 2 miles without stopping. Again, setting goals as a family is also good motivation. When you reach a goal be sure to celebrate it and LOG it! Logging goals you’ve reached in a creative way is a visual reminder that you can achieve what you set your mind to.

4) Find an accountability buddy.

It’s hard to do it on our own. We humans were made for community, and doing things on our own just isn’t natural. Try and find a buddy to work out with; or, if that is unrealistic find one to hold you accountable and follow up on how you’re coming along on your goals.

5) Be thankful.

We should be thankful for being happy and healthy. And if we’re still working on the healthy part we can be thankful we are able to fix things before it is too late. We should be thankful that we have bodies of various sizes, each beautiful in their own ways, and no one the same as the other. And thankful that we each hold the key to a healthy future.

Getting My Butt Kicked

New kicks (is that word still "in?")

We started a new workout program. Well, to say "new" may be misleading. It's not like we had a workout program before. We did if you call setting the alarm for 5:45am to work out and then pushing the snooze button every 10 minutes until 7:00am a program.

Anyways, we were tired of our sluggish bodies, and after finding Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred DVD on Amazon for $6 I thought, "why not?"

Hmm, why not? Well, for starters just 2 days in and you're unable to take stairs, bend over to get something you dropped, sit comfortably on the toilet or lift your arms above shoulder height without wincing. Also, your muscles get so swole (that's right....SWOLE) that pants formally fitting for work now look like you're ready for street corner.

I know that all these things are signs that it is working. But it hurts. It hurts like the freaking dickens. The only thing motivating me right now are my new shoes. We got them at the outlet at major discount and they fit so well. It wasn't until I found these that I realized what a good show is supposed to do for you. So the alarm hits at 5:45am, I look down at my sneaks and say "oh, I want to wear you today." It works.
